A look back at the first six months of the year gives readers a chance review the stories which made head lines last year. July 3: Bertie County Beach Day officially opened free public beach access for those looking for adventure in a serene setting; July 3: Martin, Bertie and Washington counties, along with Chatham County, have joined together for the County2County Leadership Initiative called Martin-Ber- tie County Leadership Acad emy; Bertie County Beach Day draws a huge crowd. July 10: A fugitive was captured in Bertie County. A man wanted in Martin County spent two days in the woods in Bertie County before being captured late Monday afternoon; July 10: Fireworks lit up the sky over the Cashie River and the town of Windsor last week, celebrating America’s independence; July 17: New Superin tendent of Bertie County Schools Dr. Otis Smallwood will be sworn in at 4 p.m. Tuesday, July 22 at the Ber tie County Schools Central Office; July 17: The Windsor/Ber tie Chamber of Commerce rescheduled the seventh annual Sage Festival, which celebrates the presence of clary sage in Windsor and Bertie Codnty (due to rain last month); July 24: The Bertie County 4-H received an $8,000 grant from the Albemarle Area Lfnited Way to provide chil dren access to its programs; July 31: Bertie County Schools has named new principals for four schools and announced two admin istrative changes in the cen tral office; July 31: The Vidant Ber tie Hospital Development Council recognized 18 orga nizations at their 2019-2020 Community Benefits Grants recipients last week; Aug. 7: The Bertie County Commissioners unanimous ly voted to approve the Hid den Heroes Resolution in support of Bertie County’s military and veteran caregiv- See SECOND, 5 Leadership remains in place for Bertie school board LESLIE BEACHBOARD Bertie Ledger-Advance WINDSOR -The Bertie Coun ty Board of Education mem bers voted to maintain their current chairman and vice chairman. During the board’s regu larly scheduled meeting ear lier this month, they were required to vote for the two officer seats. “We will now have the elec tion of officers,” said Bertie County Schools Superinten dent Dr. Otis Smallwood. Vice Chairman Norman Cherry nominated Chairman Tarsha Dudley to remain chairman for the next year. Board member Rickey Freeman motioned for Dud ley to remain chairman. Cherry offered a second. It was approved unanimously. Next, the board needed to decide who would hold the vice chairman position for the next year. Board member Christine Dudley nominated Cherry to remain as vice chairman for another year. The board unanimously approved the decision. The Bertie County Board of Education swore in junior board members as well at the meeting. While the junior board members will not be allowed to vote, they will have a voice and will bring the student perspective to all aspects af fecting Bertie County and its schools.
